Spiritual Abuse & Resurrecting the Past…
(Psst! Read the whole thing. There’s a FREE NEW Report on Spiritual Leader Abuse you can download towards the end!)

The other day, I received a private email from a well-known clergy leader in neopagan spiritual circles. In it she said: “The fallout of the ill-conceived James Arthur Ray sweatlodge in which now three people have died, is all too familiar. Unpalatably so, and it also happens in our circles. No worship group is immune. We must arm people against this kind of abuse.”
I’m fortunate to say I have been spared this kind of treatment in the main, for my first ten years in an alternative spiritual community was blessed. I was uniquely privileged to have been tutored by a true spiritual leader, a man of humility, endless patience, deep wisdom and an unfailingly generous concern and regard for others’ wellbeing.
His name was Corliss Raymond “d” deLarm, and under his tutelage and friendship of over twenty years I learned how very lucky I was to have had him as the template to compare all others against. When I came across my first abusive pagan clergy, it was comparing them to d’s sterling example that instantly gave rise to my knowledge that something was rotten. Ditto the so-called “big kahunas” of the various spiritual traditions I studied in that were only in it for the ego-boosts, the money or ability to mess with people’s minds.
You can learn to do the same thing, you already have the equipment you need.
“BULLSHIT”
I can so hear someone out there, saying this and believing it to the core. That you don’t have any power, you can’t change and there is no such thing as magic.
Well ’tis the season so I’ll say “Bah, Humbug” to that crap.
Step up and out into the light. It’s time. You’re ready.
And you have some pretty fantastic tools ALWAYS on hand, no batteries required.
Your body, for one.
Your body is uniquely tuned as a bullshit filter. You can watch someone speak to you and know by the movement of energy between you whether they are telling the truth or not.
Bodies get a sick feeling in the stomach when people lie to you.
The truth feels light, airy and wonderful, and a lie feels heavy, greasy and disgsting.
So if you feel reliably queasy when a teacher or guru speaks, don’t listen to the part of your head that’s telling you to be a nice boy or girl.
Shut the hell up and run for safety.
This is not a safe person for you to be around.
Got it? Truth light & airy, lie heavy, greasy & nasty.
Anywhere you feel these feelings in your body in response to another person, your body is telling you whether you can trust that person or not. Your body is very, very savvy. It doesn’t mess around because you need that information fast.
But likely as not, you’ve not been educated in how to retrieve it, read it and make a reasonable decision based on your body’s exquisite fine tuning.
It’s time to start. Stick with me and together, we’ll muddle through.
A short primer on how to tell when you’re being scammed
Spiritual and other types of abusers are to be found in every tradition, in every segment of society.
No, your church/circle/synagogue/masjid is NOT the one and only execption.
If you ever come across a teacher or organization who says “that stuff would never – COULD never happen in OUR church/circle/synagoguge/masjid ’cause we’re SPECIAL/Different/Blessed/Have the Real AUTHENTIC Fairy Dust™” – ditto my last instruction: run like hell.
The zombies have already sucked their brain out and you could be next.
If there was ever a magnet for the unscrupulous back in those days, it was me. I was a complete energy *putz*. I couldn’t manage my own energy and events of my life, much less be able to read and manage my responses to other’s energy output and emotional states.
Then I went to grad school, lived in Europe, took a buncha classes and worked as a therapist a few decades and figured it out – but not without being battered and bruised in the attempt, as many of us were.
Today, it’s much simpler because of tools like The ETHOS Method, which self-leads you gently to consciousness without a guru.
People are smarter today. We’ve got Google at our fingertips.
If you’re confused about a teacher’s integrity, plug their name into Google with the word “scam” and do a separate search on “abuse”. See what comes up. Read the accounts. Remember these will be anecdotal, a he-said/she-said situations and NOT always fact-based. If you find more than a handful of negative accounts and they seem credible, might want to step back from that situation.
And then you have dozens of people like me who love researching topics like “how to let go of the crap once and for all”, “how to transform your relationship to everything” and so on, are acting as human Googles for you, filtering up only the stuff that works.
Again, do a background check on anyone (me included – I’ve got no skeletons I’m not happy to have you know about
. Then go with…what? YOUR GUT. The body is the final arbiter and will never, ever steer you wrong.
So you’ve got a lot of support today for living a Conscious life, that wasn’t around when I was growing up, and ways to protect yourself and those you love against the unscrupulous.
Kind of makes me want to be five again…
But don’t despair, after some time in the trenches, I didn’t need to be around an unscrupulous spiritual leader long to:
(a) know they were uncool and
(b) have them know that I knew it, all without
(c) saying a word
It was an unsettling talent to have had and I’m glad to be out of the milieu that brought me into contact with these people more often than not. You can learn to do the same, and keep yourself safe. And learn how to attract only people who love and nurture you and have only your best interests and the best interests of the world at heart.
AIR & Circuit Testing
You start with paying attention to your body, and all that it tells you. You won’t in the beginning have the necessary vocabulary to dialogue well with your body, but keep communicating anyway. It’ll come. It can take as little time as you need it to take. Then, just ask your body everything as it comes up.
There’s a great technique called muscle or circuit testing that uses the electrical properties of your muscles in opposition to say “yes” or “no”. You can ask your body any yes/no question and it is pretty infallible in its answers. There are some exceptions when circuit testing your muscles doesn’t work, but most of the time it does and I always think it’s a good thing to trust the body. You’ll get to know when you’re “off” soon enough. Drinking water can fix that, as can facing another direction while you do the circuit test.
Finally, no short tutorial of mine would be complete without a discussion of A.I.R. What is A.I.R? This acronym helps us create the right everything for ourselves. It stands for “Attention, Intention and Repetition”. What you give A.I.R. to, comes to life. Literally. Anything you want, simply focus your intention on it, give that thing all your attention, and repeat doing this as often as possible. Soon, that thing will come to pass, whether for good or ill.
So far this year, bar a few minor bobbles, it’s mostly been for the good, in our spiritual community.
And then along comes James Arthur Ray, and his Sweltering Sweatlodge of Doom.
For a good rundown of what goes on in a sweat lodge – or what should go on – check out Dr. Loretta Standley’s description here. Dr. Standley observes that she is Eastern Band Cherokee (close to my father’s people in Cherokee, NC) and that the sweat is not endemic to their culture. So even as a card-carrying Native American, her comments are informed by many different tribes. She says, poignantly (and I fully agree):
While sometimes there is criticism of the white people stealing Native American spirituality, the truth is — no one can steal spirituality. That would be completely impossible. God gave us many ways to connect with one another from many cultures and we can use it to help heal others and ourselves, so honoring the importance of sharing is meaningful.
Other Leaders Weigh In and…Old Wine, New Bottle
(still kickin’ after all these years)
I was talking to Andrea Lee the other day about this situation and wondering aloud if I should haul my past life as a spiritual leader out of mothballs….in particular, some of the good tutorials I wrote back then.
I decided excavate the venerable CASHI out of the steamer trunk of the past, and rewrite it for today.
CASHI stands for “Coven Abuse Self Help Index”. I wrote it in the early 1990’s in response to my practice being overloaded, as one of a very few pagan psychotherapists in the area, with the victims of spiritual abusers. The re-issue will focus around Spiritual Leader Abuse in its many different forms.
If you’d like a FREE copy of the forthcoming paper (out in 2010) on prevention of Spiritual Leader Abuse, fill in this form and after that, keep reading:
On Andrea’s blog she writes in a comment to her provocative post about the Ray incident:
“How might we describe what these ethics and responsibilities? To focus on them is good, but what are they, so we CAN focus on them? Maybe they’re obvious, or feel like they should be obvious, but clearly they’re not, or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
So to capture the elusive obvious, might we start a list? How about…
Do no harm
Charge a fair price (whatever that is)
Teach people self-sufficiency….”
I replied to Andrea’s well-thought words: “To this list I would add:”
* When you appropriate another culture’s ritual, bother yourself to research it with the commitment of an adademician & know every single possible side effect both psychological, physical and metaphysical
* Do your own internal work so that you know you are leading such a serious ritual with the appropriate spirit, intentions and reasons. Any reason that points back to you in any way as a leader, is the wrong reason. You are there to serve…as we all are.
* Adapt what you are doing to minimize the damages
* Fully pre-inform all participants of those potential damages
* Ensure that a minimum of one professional caregiver (nurse, med tech etc.) is present per three to five participants at a potentially life threatening situation.
If you can’t make this minimum set of “ground floor level” responsibility, then cancel your event and teach something that will not have the ability to maim or kill participants.
That’s my .02 as one with history in shamanic practice, and one reason why I’d never do anything for the public like a mass sweat. It’s also why in the twenty-five years I knew him, my teacher only did a bare handful of sweats, only with people he’d worked with for years, only when properly prepared and usually for some community emergency situation, to help others.
Others’ mileage may vary, but I say err on the side of caution. If you can’t do your own internal work, study up, prevent badness & provide reasonable after-care, just don’t go there.
What Can We Do?
The absolute best thing for each of us is to keep steping into our Unlimited Selves. When we’re in that state, there is no way you will get “hooked” by unscrupulous teachers, therefore no way you, or anyone you influence will get screwed over. When we’re purely present, we don’t need teachings or teachers. Life itself to quote Karen Horney, remains a most effective teacher.
What’s your experience of spiritual leaders, and their treatment of those in their care?
It bugs some people, enrages others. I’d love to hear from you on this because I know mine is not the only valid opinion out there. You tell me what you think, teach your truth, and we’ll talk this thing out. What’s YOUR view? Read below for a cool new 3-In-One way to take up the talking stick and let us know what you think.

Thanks Britt, appreciate the re-tweet. What do YOU think of abusive spiritual leaders?
Everyone: Are we willing to tolerate this kind of behavior?
On what grounds? Who is exempt, if anyone? Should anyone be?
There are many ethical questions to weigh in on.
Continue the conversation!
I look forward to reading your thoughts…

Interesting views, and I like what you say. Only thing I’m wondering about is your claim about your body knowing when someone is lying to you. Don’t know if you ever attended these seminars, but they get you high on hope and dreams. I’ve been there, and I believed it. I like to think I’m tuned into my intuition, and James Arthur Ray (and the gamut of gurus) are all well versed in marketing. I won’t go into all the tactics, but amongst them are the universal truth that we all feel we deserve better and that our talents are under-utilized. Then comes the part where “you are 5% of the population” pitch that says you are more special and unique than most (I’ve venture a guess that it works 99% of the time, because we do all feel special), and then the hype of the dream (and the threat of failure to comply will dictate your eternal failure from here on in. Smacks of organized religion, doesn’t it? Grin. These tactics work so well. Hence the $11Billion annual industry.
Anyways, thanks for you thoughtful and thought-inspiring post!
Sincerely
Britt

Hi Britt,
You’re welcome and I’m enjoying your words too! And I do know what you mean about these seminars and the tactics they use. (BTW, am also a big Robert Cialdini fan as I note you are from your blog) Awareness of the tactics as you point out, is one good defense. And I still maintain that body awareness and communication is the best (and maybe only) way to avoid the bullsh**t.
To those who may think otherwise: have you ever really, seriously devoted concentrated time to getting to know your built-in lie detector? If you do, I assure you, you will be very, very difficult to take advantage of.
Gurus like Britt speaks of are hooking people at the mirror neuron level. Google that, it’s information you might want to know about, but suffice to say that your body can energetically scan, read and formulate an action plan from plugging into the energy of someone else’s neural net. Unscrupulous teachers use this, knowingly or not, along with hypnotic language patterning and some of the same skills that many of us use in our legitimate healing, coaching and transformation practices.
The difference between the two is Intent. (Remember: A.I.R.!) Remaining attuned to your own responses will provide you with a good early warning system.
I can speak for myself and most of my students in that within months of starting to pay attention to the body’s responses, you have merely to go into the conference room, event tent or even online class and you’ll get a funky feeling if it’s not right for you.
Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. It’s simple, and it works. We were just stuck on earth without the damned instruction manual. Hope these words help remedy that in part.
December 15th, 2009 17:36
I hate this whole thing so much; it makes me sad and yet, if we each develop enough sense of ourselves, enough strength and self-knowledge, maybe it will happen less? That said, this is why I have had few teachers and never taken a guru. Thanks for a great post!
December 15th, 2009 22:13
You’re welcome and…I think you hit the nail on the head Jen.
An advanced knowledge of self will always reveal the tools to solve any problem we’ll ever have, plus make us savvier as consumers. I ask myself “Why would ordinary, reasonable people abandon good sense and the cries of their wiser bodies to listen to a slave-driving perfectionist in a situation that could imperil their lives?”
That’s the part that never made sense to me through all the years I’ve heard about things like this: The Manson family. Jonestown. Heaven’s Gate. The Branch Davidians in Waco. The people who subscribed to these gurus weren’t all gullible and stupid, particularly in Jonestown. Many were professionals, some in governmental positions. They were thinkers, they had savvy. And they succumbed.
Why?
I think it is because to live an unexamined life is the way most people function. When an opportunity for such examination is presented, as in the typical “religious experience”, going forward can be scary as you’re moving in uncharted waters. The help of one who has been there before is a sacred part of human experience. The psychopomps, the priest/esses, the shamans and the guides have always been part of these procesesses, from time immemorial.
We should be able to trust these people.
But clearly, we can’t. Not all of them, not all the time. My teacher d. had a saying:
“No oracle is 100% correct 100% of the time. Observe actions and consider the source.”
Wise words.
If there were one thing I’d wish people to take away from this whole debacle it’s to run a check by their body before doing *anything* someone else suggests – particularly if they demand it.
Get up and walk away if you’re not being treated right or someone tells you to go against your body’s advice.
Also, don’t give a happy damn about what others might think of you. Someone is always going to think you’re less than you’d like. Consider this a fine and strong invitation to level-up your consciousness by allowing their perceptions to be THEIR business – not yours. Slightly adjusting your perceptions this way prevents the upset caused by attachment to inconsequentials.
This is one of the hugest things for us to surmount, the need to please. It comes from a deep-seated feeling that we are in the wrong, somehow less important or worthy than the person sitting across from us….who can talk and think faster than we can in a situation they have set up to favor themselves.
I’d like people to take away from this discussion that it’s immaterial what that person, guru or friend, thinks of you too. While in general you want to take a teacher’s advice, if it feels wrong, don’t do it and don’t care what others think, period. In ten years it won’t matter.
In fact, that’s a good filter to set up for ourselves. “Will this decision matter in 10 years?”
If not, take a deep breath, bless ‘em & hit the road, Jack.

Bang on!
Wish I had this when I was part of the JW cult!
THEY of course have the truth!
Scary … scary … and when I began to question the ‘truth’ .. I was shunned.
Left the church 24 years ago .. still in therapy ….

Lyle, you strike a chord. My first brush with this kind of thing was Mormonism. My parents were persuaded to join after the death of my grandfather. We all converted and it was a miserable experience for me until I left at age 13.
The psychological manipulation was intense. My husband experienced the same and worse in a fundamentalist Baptist church. I also had similar experiences with abusive people when I was a Muslim in college.
At the end of my father’s life, after 40 years as a dedicated Mormon elder, the church tried to take their house away from my mother, while she was in the final years of life herself.
While these are shameful doings, there are good people in any religion, any city, town or state.
I am pulling for those who are becoming aware inside each religion.
Many have said the time for formalized religion is over, others that we need it now more than ever.
But if religion is to succeed as a nurturing, generative paradigm, it will most definitely need to change. Drastically, in many instances.
Thank you for your thoughts Lyle, most provocative!

Namaste Maryam,
We are each made in the image and likeness of God/Higher Power/Source of All That Ever Is & Ever Was… despite our upbringings, instilled beliefs, egoic qualities or stubborn fears. That being said, I believe there’s a reason for everything that happens. I believe good can come from anything. I believe freewill allows for “mistakes” to happen so that life lessons can be learned. I believe no matter what transpires, it’s not about judgment; it’s about the experience so that we may come to know LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!
Just as the Eurythmics sing, “Who am I to disagree? Travel the world and the seven seas – Everybody’s looking for something – Some of them want to use you – Some of them want to get used by you – Some of them want to abuse you – Some of them want to be abused.”
It’s not so much ‘how’ we come to know love so long as we come to know it.
ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE ~ Michelle
December 16th, 2009 18:00
Michelle, that you for your thoughts! It’s especially poignant you say that free will allows for lessons to be learned and the end point is love. That’s my experience too.
Eckhart Tolle says that he doesn’t like using the word “love” as it’s been so very misinterpreted in the way people use it to justify their actions.
So if I may ask this of everyone – what is Love? All the gurus say this is the point, but what is it?
What’s your experience? Your deep inner knowing about this?

Maryam-
Thanks for this thought-provoking discussion. The dark side of human development and spirituality is so disappointing to many people. I have an older friend who was telling me about all the great “gurus” of her day in the early 1970’s. None of them are around any more, all de-frocked or uncovered for frauds.
Like you, I have been blessed to work with a genuine spiritual teacher who is not famous nor would ever want to become so. Your comments about listening to your body are spot on.
When you feel pressured to buy something right now, spend money you don’t have, make a bold decision that goes against all common sense, run the other way fast. A spiritual leader with your best interest at heart never asks you to leave your common sense behind and stop thinking for yourself. The same is true for coaches, personal development leaders, and all of us who train and teach.
There are wonderful people who are truly commited to helping others grow with integrity and honesty. There are charlatans and cheaters too.
Part of our own evolution is developing the discernment to be able to tell the difference. This is harder than it seems and most of us will stumble many times. But, those stumbles can teach us too.
Thanks again for bringing your considerable wisdom to this topic. It seems to be part of a groundswell of change online, and I am celebrating this shift towards honesty and truth!
December 17th, 2009 22:34
Thanks Lynne for your sage wisdom, yes, many of those from the 70’s and 80’s have faded into the woodwork and I guess this is something that has always haunted humans through history. It’s just that we’re so much better connected now that we see more of it and from more sides.
I agree though, that there is a change taking place in what we are willing to both tolerate and allow.
Reminds me of the old “Toleration-Free” program of Thomas Leonard’s.
Good time to dust that one off and bring its light to more people. Yes!
Honesty and Truth! Liberté, Fraternité, Egalité!

Beautifully said! I just had to sign up for the CASHI – and I hope you keep digging! These decisions seem to be coming up for many in our community recently. May you find many pleasant memories and treasures! Sometimes we must go back before we can move forward. I also hope you find more to share –
I would like to add a thought or two to the discussion about Mr. Ray…
Before we judge him, we should compare the information provided by Mr. Ray to the investigators to what is being bandied about in the popular press. It is easily available, and if any are on his mailing list, you’ve already gotten copies.
Of course, in doing so, one has to weigh their opinions about the media against their opinions about the motivations of a hired attorney. For me personally, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle no matter who is telling which side.
What kept those people in the lodge so long will forever remain a mystery. Why Mr. Ray feels 8 rounds are better than one or two – we could ask if we really wanted to know. Why the venue destroyed the lodge, burned the tarps and buried the Grandfather stones before the investigation was over, one can only guess at this point.
No matter what happens “officially” – Mr. Ray, and indeed everyone involved in the situation will have to face the consequences of their decisions on that day for the rest of their lives – only they can know their own truth.
For me, I honor the spirits of those who passed, and bless their journey. I honor the spirits of those who remain, bless them, and pray for continued growth and healing.
I also bless each of us on our path of growth and discovery – for, while we might have heard of it, we would not have brought it so far into our awareness if there were nothing for us to learn personally from this situation!

Well said Sue, and a good reminder to avoid “Making an ASS out of U and ME” – don’t assume.
