Letter To A New Personal Performance Coach - Part IV

Finishing out our discussion of beginning Coaching questions, is Part IV and the continuation of my answer to:

"When can I call myself a Coach? Some people say; "you’re already a
Coach," "others say that I’m not a Coach until I have training.
"

The Energy Coaches I train are unsure about calling themselves
Coaches when they first start out at the beginning of their practice.
This, handed down from many different teachers is also what I tell them:

"The gift of your presence is tremendous and precious. Most people,
even those in large families with many friends, do not have this in
their lives. If you bring nothing to your coaching sessions but your
full presence, your deepest listening and true caring and compassion
for your client, you will have brought them a gift beyond price, and
wonderful coaching into the bargain. Anything else you do for them is
icing on the cake and a tremendous value-add for them, but the
foundations of good coaching lie in your full and focused Presence. And
this is True."

Now, others on this list may have varying mileage on this point, but
the above is my deep experience. Deep Presence, Listening and what I
would further qualify as Loving Compassion or simple kindness towards
your client. You have their best interests at heart and are there just
and only for them. That isn’t something the best coaching school in the
world can teach you. You were born with these skills. You have them in
you already. And, you have been using them to coach others since you
were very small. See? You’ve been coaching for years already!  :-)

Just because these are tools that cannot be taught, doesn’t mean they
cannot be further developed though. At first you will be
self-conscious, nervous perhaps. More focused on you than on your
client. Am I asking the right questions? Is my pacing okay? Are we
going in the right direction here? These questions and more might be
running through your mind at the outset. It would be strange indeed if
they did not! But that doesn’t mean you’re not a Coach, and are not
still Coaching.

This is very like the practice of meditation. You may not be in bliss
at the outset, but can still define yourself as "I am a meditator", and
say "I have a practice of meditation" even after Day One. So as in
meditation, simply bring your mind back to the state of Presence as and
when you can in your coaching.

As you mature as a Coach, you’ll find it easier and easier to stay in
the state of Presence and allow your intuition and the interplay of
your energy and the client’s to guide you more and more. And in time,
your sessions will become more and more effortless, more and more "in
the flow". Your clients will marvel at how fantastic you are (and refer
their friends like crazy), while you smile and know you did little more
than simply bring Presence to their process. And this is a tremendously
valuable talent, and worthy of reimbursement.

While there is certainly more to Coaching that this, without Presence,
Listening and Loving Compassion as a base, all the bells and whistles
are meaningless. Start with these as your basis, and you can
confidently call yourself a Coach and charge reasonable fees for your
services, with appropriate disclosure on your training status to your
clients, any time you like. When that feels like the right thing to do,
is up to you.

Warmest Blessings to you in your exciting new journey,
Maryam Webster
