Letter To A New Personal Performance Coach - Part I
A young personal performance Coach-in-training wrote in to a "New Coaches" email list I subscribe to asking several pertinent questions that I find many new Coaches asking. Since many of the Energy Coaches I train and other new Coaches read my blog, I am reprinting her questions and my answers here, in serial form. Check back every few days for more sections of this article…
First Question: "Asking for payment, early in training - I keep thinking I have to finish the core classes before I ask for money."
My answer: What a great question! I know a lot of coaches and coaching schools advocate the half-hour or full hour free coaching demo session. There was a time when I did as well, but no more. When you’re very new, you may think you’d have to coach for free for a few months just to get clientele. Personally, I would NEVER do anything for free.
Always make sure there is an equal energy exchange or the client will NOT value their coaching (and your time) appropriately. It also sets up a precedent that you do things for free. If you don’t do this, when you do finally ask people to pay, there may be resentment. There are ways to get past this, but much better is to train your clientele to value you appropriately from the beginning.
As I’ll go into next week, you already have inherent value within you, even before being trained as a Coach, that is beyond price. Value yourself enough to charge at least a fair reimbursment for the time you will be putting in serving your clients. A free 10 minute consultation to determine whether the person is a good fit for your services is dandy, but keep it to 10 minutes. More time means billable hours.
