How To Set An Anchor for the “Piece Of Cake” Process

In my previous post on the “Piece of
Cake Process”
, we were setting three anchors of resourceful states, stacking
those anchors and taking them into a present state where you are feeling
non-resourceful. I’ve been asked by those who don’t know hypnosis or
neurolinguistic programming, “how do I set an anchor? and what exactly IS an
anchor?”

An anchor, is a place in
the body/mind that holds a powerful memory of an emotion, time and place where
you were uniquely resourceful and could do anything, or unresourceful and
unable to do things for yourself. When you first rode a bike and fell off, it
may have set a NEGATIVE anchor in the part of the body that hit the ground.
When you first knew you could do something all by yourself, such as make your
bed on your own, it set a POSITIVE anchor, perhaps in the arms and hands that
drew the sheets and blankets up so nice and tidy.

Both Positive and Negative
anchors have their uses…

In the “Piece of
Cake Process” example
, we start with a Negative
Anchor. A place you’re feeling bad about yourself or your (in)ability to do
something.

To evoke and “set” this
anchor, step into the place labelled “Symptom” and remember how you couldn’t do
the thing in question, exactly how it felt, what you heard and saw and what you
were telling yourself. Take some time to really evoke, or bring forth those
unique places in your mind. When you have a really good sense of how BAD it
felt, stamp your feet and let it all flow off your body like a puddle on the
floor onto the paper labelled “Symptom”. Step off the paper and into the
Neutral Position.

You have just set a
Negative Anchor on the floor, and stepped away from it.

Now, to cancel it out
completely by bringing in three Positive Resource anchors, that you will set in your body and take with you instead of leaving on the floor.

Step into the “Resource
State” paper on the floor and again use the process of evocation to remember a time when you were
on top of the world, when you felt and thought and knew “I can do it!”, or a
time when you were able to overcome some challenge. See what you saw back then,
feel what you felt, hear what other people are telling you and importantly,
what messages you were sending yourself.

When you feel, hear and see
everything the fullest, tap your hand against your hip, stomach, heart or other
place in your body that you feel these emotions most fully. This bodily movement,
at the height of your feeling the positive state, “sets” the anchor to the
feelings, ideas, beliefs and other resources that you had in this state, and helps you bring them into the present.

Now as the process suggests (please refer to the previous post on this for the mechanics of the process) step out and back into two more Resourceful
States/Memories using the same procedure touching the same place on your body,
to “set”  anchors to two other wonderful, resourceful and successful memories. When you do this successive times touching the same place as an anchor-point, it is referred to as
“stacking” anchors.

Hold your
hand over your hip, stomach, heart or other place on your body you used as an anchor-point, as you step off of the “Resource State" the final time. Holding this place, step back into the “Symptom” and let go of the anchor-point on your body. You have just released these collected or “stacked” anchors into the non-resourceful state of the Symptom.

This works kind of like having a dose of really strong medicine will knock out an infection. With three times more
resources, the Stacked Positive Anchors cancel out the one Negative Anchor of
the Symptom state.

It’s important to take a
few minutes and notice what changes. What’s different since you released
the Positive Anchors? What’s new? Note your learning, enjoy the feeling, and move on.

And that, O Best Beloved,
is how you set, stack, hold and release anchors…
