8 Random Things About Me

Friday, July 27th, 2007 by Maryam Webster

A little late on the ball, but in response to biz-buddy Krishna’s tag in her post: 8 random things about me

Krishna  tagged me to write about 8 random things about myself so here goes. I’ve decided in typical me-style to be truly random…  ;-)

  1. Like Krishna, I’ll start with my name. "Maryam" is the name I took by requirement during my three-and-a-bit years as a practicing Muslim, circa 1981. It felt so much more "me" than my given name, I made it legal and permanent. "Webster" is an ancient name in my mother’s family line I re-monikered with after divorce.  It didn’t occur to me until I used my freshly-minted driver’s license as ID, that the combination together sounded similar to the name of a prominent dictionary. People have been reminding me of that (usually with laughter) ever since…
  2. When I first put up my website in 1996, I got a nastygram from the Merriam Webster dictionary people as I too am a prolific writer and produced tons of material that contained words in their book. Imagine the cheek, they said. They desisted after a spell of chatting with me. An almost magical sense of charm and persuasion goes a long way back among the women in my family.
  3. I am a veteran of nearly thirty years in shamanic practice of both metis and Nordic medicine ways, and apprenticed fifteen years to a Missouri sweet medicine man, Corliss  "d" deLarm, who stands unequalled but by the Dalai Lama in spiritual presence, in my personal experience. I’ve taught the Nordic system of runes as healing, divinatory and spiritual advancement tools for about twenty-five years.  My, how Dagaz flies…
  4. Medicine BuddhaSpeaking of the Dalai Lama, I  have received two initiations from His Holiness Tenzing Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. The White Tara longevity empowerment and the Medicine Buddha initiation and blessing for my work in healing. It’s not as cool as you think though - I was one of about five thousand that day to receive these blessings.  And he was going along so fast in Tibetan you had a hard time keeping up with the visualizations of a white Buddha above a towering stack of golden Buddhas all holding lotus flowers and so on and so on.

It worked though. About a month later I gashed the living daylights out of my thigh vacuuming (a dangerous profession), managed to clean the 2" deep wound out, instill betadine, close the wound with steri-strips and get a pressure bandage on it all while reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra and the husband was fainting dead away just at the sight of the thing. Chanted the whole way to the hospital and had an amazing personal experience with both Medicine Buddha and His Holiness, plus didn’t feel a thing when stitched. (12 stitches, 4" scar just above the knee) Cue doctor amazement and personal happiness…

  5. I have a broken back. Almost everyone’s heard this story but if you haven’t here’s the teacup version: Whilst living in Cambridge, England on a rainy night, drunk driver sails over the top of a roundabout and slams into my Mini van (Mini as in Cooper) causing iron box with heavy pipe wrenches to slam into my back. *crunch*  L4 cracked vertically, spinous process on L5 fragmented, spinal cord trauma. Had to move back to U.S. for surgery as in England, would have been on a two year wait just for a diagnostic MRI. Progressive paralysis. Spent a total of three years paralyzed from the waist down, intense surgery, six more years recovering mobility. Can walk, run, dance and hike now. Today, it’s only a problem if I don’t keep up vigorous exercising.
  6. My favorite form of exercise is hiking in the redwoods, but don’t get to do that every day. Yoga, I do every day and couldn’t live without it.  At right is me circa 2006 outside my old studio - Willow Glen Yoga in San Jose, CA with cone-head hair after the last downward facing dog of the day. Great yoga and good people - click my picture to go there. Been practicing yoga since 1974, when I learned in an afternoon class in junior high school. We learned straight-up hatha and our teacher busted our chops. Then and again, we were young and our chops could stretch a lot further in those days… My spiritual mentor d. deLarm extended this practice through the next twenty years in sharing the blessings of Integral Yoga. Balance Yoga (balancecenter.com) got me mobile again following my paralysis. Lately my passion is Yin Yoga (paulgrilley.com) as I’ve still got a lot of shortened tendons and stiff muscles. Yoga keeps ‘em limber and the mind, serene.
  7. not my cat but...cute!If you like cats and you’re a computer nerd, you might "has" seen the picture at left. (No, it’s not my kitties, it came from here) While I love friend’s children, I am blissfully child-free, though am mother to two mitties. (cats - mitten + kitty = mittie….don’t ask) They are dark charcoal fluffball, the Princess Anoushka and her lean grey huntress companion with the perfect white bikini, Tashi-Claire. The Bear wanted to name them Xena and Gabrielle but was overruled by the cats themselves who told us their names and insisted we use them.

The mitties  exist in a partially contentious, partially collegial relationship and strictly enforce territorial limits of the garden. Tosh-cat is an avid bird watcher and is generally interested in the wildlife that pervades the area around the pool. Anoushka is a garage kitty and hangs out on the persian carpet under the Bear’s office chair, even on the hottest and muggiest of days. We figure her to be an adherent of Virginia Woolfe.   Myself and the Bear are seen as jailers and parental units. I love them unmercifully of which they are tolerant and accepting and both feed and comb them. But when the Bear is home, I am relegated to chopped liver status. They are the only cats I know who actually *dislike* chopped liver…

  8.  I am an accomplished frontierswoman. Though you wouldn’t think it to look at me, I can make my own paper and ink, spin, weave, dye woven goods with native plants, make soap in a cast iron cauldron, split logs, make brooms and other tools of wood and local plants, harvest and manage forest foods such as hickory nuts, boil the hickory branches to get  three kinds of food: salt, sugar and milk (yep, you can), muddle and sweeten ground roasted acorns for frontier flour, construct a log cabin (well, in theory, I only did it once and that was with a lot of help - those logs are heavy!), grow, harvest and make herbal medicines (plus know how to use them), midwife human and animal babies into the world, make shoes from leather, plants or refuse such as old tires (great for treads), set, manage and harvest a trotline for fish, snares for rabbit and quail, plus skin and dress the meat if called upon to do so (not my favorite thing) and tan the skins. I can build a fire with a bow drill and pine duff or other local tinder, though it takes a long time. I can construct a shelter out of almost any material available, and find food in a forest even in winter. What’s more, I have a hardy spirit and am a survivor, born of a long line of women who persisted, shared their knowledge and endured to win in life.

I’ve not been called on to do any of these frontier tasks in a long time, but the memory still persists. My mother was a great one for recapturing the pioneer spirit and my great grandmother on my father’s side up in the Smoky Mountains of Carolina (they really do look like they’re smoking - see?) thought a girl child should know how to weave and dye and make soap, ink, paper and so on.

The picture above  right is in front of the National Frontier Trails Center in Independance, MO, close to my hometown, and she was always pointed out as a model to follow. Though I must say I adore my computer, electric fans, swimming pool and other modern conveniences, if and when the lights finally go out, I’ll know what to do. Can’t buy that kind of peace of mind, plus it’s a joy to know you can survive by your own efforts.

So now it’s my turn to tag eight people so I’ll now ask some of my great "virtual crushes" I’ve connected to through life, business, blogging and sharing personal energy, to share 8 random things about themselves. Over to you folks:  Suzanne Falter Barnes, Jen Louden, Andrea Lee, Ellen Britt, Betsy Muller, Gloria Arenson, Sarah Zeldman, Jasmine White and Vikki Hoobyar…

When You Are Inspired…

Saturday, May 12th, 2007 by Maryam Webster

A Powerful Pointer To Bliss:

Yoga is not simply the science and art of moving your body into a pretzel shape or sweating at high temperatures. The majority of yoga is concerned with "your inner pretzel", or yoga to develop the mind and soul. Inspiration is a powerful motivator and pointer towards enlightenment. The following is a quote by the great Indian sage Patanjali on the subject of inspiration:

When you are inspired by some great purpose,
some extraordinary project,
all of your thoughts break their bonds
Your mind transcends limitations.
Your consciousness expands in every direction.
And you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world.
Dormant forces, faculties and talents come alive
and you discover yourself to be a greater person
by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.

So if you’re feeling piddly, puny and small, think about why you’re here on the earth - the real reason. Not the laundry list of things you have to do before the next board meeting or team call…or for that matter, your laundry. Focus on what juices you, even though right now you can’t see how it will help you work through your management issue, product distribution troubles, or get a thousand pounds of rice into your charity’s warehouse, or…

Address any thoughts, beliefs and blockages to living fully expressed and in flow with the universe with ZPoint, EFT or your favorite energy therapy. These thoughts and beliefs bind us and keep us from fully expressing as Source. As you lose this bondage, those dormant forces, faculties and talents Patanjali speaks of will pop out of the woodwork with an energy and swiftness and appropriateness that will astonish and delight you. And you will discover yourself to be a greater person that you ever dreamed you could be.

Enjoy the Bliss!!

Sound the Drum - Global Energy Healing Effort For Victims of Hurricane Katrina!

Friday, September 2nd, 2005 by Maryam Webster

DO SOME GOOD RIGHT NOW - TODAY AND EVERY DAY Calling all Healers, Energy Workers & Coaches! Join a Global Healing Effort for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina. At Noon, today, wherever you are today and at Noon for the next MONTH, use EFT and tap, use TAT and hold the position, use BSFF or ZPoint and use your cueword, Reiki or Pranic energy or whatever you know, to work for those who cannot work for their own health, healing and clarity. For just FIVE MINUTES, keep it up, and meditate, pray, or send your intentions for healing for the victims of this tragedy. If you’re extra committed or have the time, TEN MINUTES would be appreciated by those in need.

FACT: We know that energy healing works well at a distance and even over the phone. Like a fervent prayer, like sacred smoke on the winds of change, let our energies float up, combine over the southern states and radiate a POWERFUL WEB OF HEALING to all who need it. Won’t you join us?

CONNECT IN THIS EFFORT IF YOU ARE PARTICIPATING, please leave a COMMENT below, and let everyone know what methods you’re using and what you’re doing. Did you know you could use the comment section of a blog to start a back-and-forth discussion?  To vent your thoughts, feelings and discuss your healing efforts, please feel free to post here - it’s like a mini bulletin board system, here for your use. Leave your unique energetic "signature", a word of power or prayer of thanksgiving. Connect, renew, refresh.

ALTERNATES TO TRADITIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE: And if watching all the devastation is getting to you, Wikipedia has a constantly updating site on the web that is a better choice than televised coverage, with more statistics that you probably want to know at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina

DONATIONS: If you’re looking, here are some other reputable places to contribute to Hurricane Katrina relief:

www.redcross.org  www.networkforgood.com    www.worldvision.com    www.charitynavigator.com

Our government isn’t doing enough to help the people who are dying in the southern States. Get off your keister and donate. Even a buck or two. I’ve researched it, and with these organizations, 100% of your donated money is going straight to the relief effort, not into administrator’s pockets.

REFRESHING THE SPIRIT Thinking of all the fubar abroad in the world today, I take refuge in writings like this, from Stephen Aizenstadt’s Dreamtending site:

There is much disturbance in the world today, there is also disorder in the world behind the world, in the realm of the dream time. We find ourselves in a world filled with difficult contradictions. Torn between helplessness and outrage, despair and hope, we each struggle to make sense out of what, at times, seems senseless. We feel the impotence created by the isolation and separation that results from being caught between vastly polarized perspectives and interests. Bridges are hard to find, meaning difficult to establish. Perhaps the one remaining unifying experience is our empathy for those who are suffering so much at this moment. In our grief, we join with others in a way that transcends time, place, and identity. And extraordinary things happen when we experience the commonality of heartfelt sorrow — a portal opens, and we gain access to the deeper sources of our humanity. In these intimate pools of sadness and loss we open to the realm of consciousness that is informed by the dream.

After the previous post I strode purposefully into my back garden, sat on the three square feet of actual soil therein and began a long, low drumbeat to guide my sorrowing spirit to clarity. Stephen’s words resonate, for it is into the dreamworld, the world behind this world of ordinary consciousness, that I go for respite, relief and help. Whatever your tradition is, go to that silent, calm place of the Divine within and seek help for those who are in too much turmoil to seek it themselves.

And again, please do join us all in the Global Healing For Victims of Katrina Effort. At Noon, today, wherever you are today and for the next month, use EFT and tap, use TAT and hold the position, use BSFF or ZPoint and use your cueword to work for those who cannot work for their own health, healing and clarity right now. Drink water for those who have none, tap, pose, to end the panic. Meditate, chant, pray. Whatever you can do, do it now. They need you. As someday, you may need them.

We are All One.

All Sentient Beings are our Relations.

Gimme That Old Time Bloggernacle…

Monday, March 7th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

Reposted from my entry over at EasyBake Andy’s site:

Speaking as a both a former-Mormon and former-Muslim, I found FeministMormonHousewives, a multi-authored tale of Mormonism, diapers and feminist rhetoric, very interesting. The term "Bloggernacle" is a take-off on "Tabernacle" - the Mormon version of cathedral. Feminism and Mormonism is to my mind an unlikely mix as any for a personal blog, but a refreshing read as I’m sure you’ll find, as well as being only one of thousands of spiritual niche blogs. (Aside to coaches: what a great example of a niche market!) Be sure to check out the spitfire Muslimah at Love Thy Ummah as well. These women provide a look inside an otherwise shuttered lifestyle that many Westerners may not know about. The intricacies of Muslim women’s life is a particular draw since women from Iran (like the refreshingly honest Lady Sun) and Afghanistan began to blog in early Y2K. In addition it is worthwhile to mention the "non-People-Of-the-Book" blogs by Pagans around the world (a random list of which is at Blogwise), such as the venerable Wren’s Nest, a catalogue of media mentions of Pagans worldwide. Get yourself to the Bloggernacle, Blog-o-Mosque or Blog-o-Grove and learn how other folks live their spirituality. A delightful education…

From: New York Times, 03-05-05 "Faithful Track Questions, Answers and Minutiae on Blogs"

"In many ways, Lisa Butterworth is the very image of Mormon devotion; she lives in Boise, Idaho, with her husband and their three children younger than 4, faithfully attending church and teaching Sunday school. But then there is her Web log, or blog, FeministMormonHousewives.blogspot.com. Unlike the more mainstream Mormon blogs - known collectively as the Bloggernacle - that by and large promote the faith, this online diary focuses on the universal challenges of mothering young children and on frustration with the limited roles women have in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints…It is also one of a growing number of religion-oriented blogs, many of them irreverent and contrarian, and all serving as a meeting point for the like-minded…

"People who blog tend to be the kind who already have firm opinions and a certain world-view," said Kathy Shaidle, a self-described "conservative Catholic Gen-Xer" and founder of RelapsedCatholic.com….

In her blog, Love Thy Ummah (www.mos-love.blogspot.com)- Ummah means "the Muslim community" - "I’m speaking from the perspective of a young Muslim woman in America. It’s a unique outlet," Ms. Mohammed said. "The blog lets me get my voice out there."

Many blogs, particularly those by the most fervently religious, are anonymous. Aidel Maidel, whose nom-de-blog means "Nice Jewish Girl", posts about the ups and downs of being a working religious mother who is fairly new to Hasidic life.

There are also blogs by Christians of every denomination, Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs. One hub, Blogs4God.com, lists 1,230 Christian blogs. Jeff Sharlet, editor of The Revealer, a daily online review of religion in the news, said there had even been an Amish blog."

White Truffle Oil Dreamin’

Sunday, December 12th, 2004 by Maryam Webster

White musk,

Rich marrow spilling…

Survival is assured.

I have formed a mild mania for White Truffle Oil. Well, to Il Fornaio’s Proscuitto, Arugula, Grana Padano parmesan and Porcini laden Pizza Cristina. This delightful concoction is liberally drizzled with White Truffle Oil that smells like roasted ox marrow - buttery, rich and sustaining. A hint of extreme luxury rich in beneficial nutrients that there is never enough of for the entire tribe to share - an honor to savor. I am certain white truffle oil must have medicinal properties. "It hath the power to cheer and mellow the disposition" to quote Mrs. Grieve. Hie thee to a grocery store and try some.

Tonight I made a happy but tired J-Bear the gift of a small quantity of white truffle oil infused roasted pecans. He had made me a gift of the oil after his earlier trip to the shops. Such decadence. ("Land sake!" Grandmother Mimi exclaims inside my head, deeply whiffing the bottle and wiping clean hands on her apron.)  Dr. Mercola preaches the values of mineral-rich Celtic sea salt as does Dr. Batman. I just happened to have some on hand that I use for cooking (it’s nice to know periodically that we’re doing something right, unawares). I ground sea salt in a mortar and sprinkled the pecans with it.  Foodies: Toss pecans thoroughly in walnut or almond oil with salt and broil on a cookie sheet at 250F for ten or fifteen minutes. Resist the temptation to use flavored salts - the pecans are richness enough on their own. Drizzle sparingly with white truffle oil and toss again. Eat, trying very hard to constrain portion size. Heavenly.

This collation was a really nice treat after a whole lot of unremitting toil that’s left us wanting Minor Indulgences. We felt most luxurious consuming those Roasted Pecans  - the only one of my Mother’s holiday delicacies it’s relatively safe for healthy people to eat. White truffle oil. Mmmm…

We have plans to lay in some arugula and prosciutto and make our own pizza dough, though Dr. Mercola does preach quite voiciferously against grains lately, and now, perilously, about the dangerous mycotoxins in my beloved truffles! Okay Doc, but I’m not ready yet. A few more artisan pizzas and sprouted flaxseed rolls. I’m going to work on getting rid of sensitivities to grains, though I will probably eventually cease eating them as my body purifies. But not quite yet!

I still want to have the odd luxury, having given up all the vices I thought I had and being rudely informed that there are others - many, many others that will need to go for perfect health. Well thanks a lot Doc, thanks a lot. I appreciate the advice, but jimminy crickets, what a bummer! I’m going to keep affirming all things healthy and positive in my life anyway - a great Practice at any time. And in the right time, these things too shall pass…

One by one, the pleasures of the past are replaced by greater knowledge, the awareness of decisions and opportunity of Choice. As I have made decisions to forego certain foods and beverages, I have also made decisions to exit certain environments and relationships for healthier ones. Wheat is largely gone in my life but for special treat moments such as the ever-yummy Pizza Cristina and Mom’s holiday pecans.  Spiritual communities that were rife with chaos and politics have been released for a smaller fellowship of rare but very special individuals who lift me up, consistently. I’ve chosen to eschew the corporate environment in favor of running my own consulting business which is a thousand times more rewarding both to me and to those I work with. In these small ways and others, I am turning my life into a life that makes more of a difference and helps both myself and everyone I can touch.

We all touch each and every person that even peripherally crosses our lives. Even a friend heard-of but never met is having impact and influence on you, and you upon them. Now that influence may be small, but you are connected by the thread of your mutual friend, so it still impacts. So it is throughout The Field. Think about it.

Morel of the Story: When in doubt as to what you can do to move forward and upward, look for what can shift, and in Joy, shift it. Food, people, environments, whatever, as long as you remain in Joy. The Joy is your filter and indicator flag that lets you know that you are moving towards the right thing. Whatever that may be for you. Trying to shift without engaging your passion and your love is like trying to move the Sphinx by yourself. Sure, it can be done but it’s going to take all your energy, and for what? Consider deeply the role of Joy in Moving the Universe…

Hijab in the Hot Zone

The Gamut Point of Fashion < -- click here for a thought provoking photo of differences in Iraqi fashion

Anyone who has fixed ideas about the state of hijab (veiling, hair and body covering) in Iraq needs to get themselves on over to Iraqi dentist Zeyad's awesome “Healing Iraq” blog for consistently provocative, informative content and check out his photo blogs, one of which is of a several radical Women’s Groups holding events in Fardus Square, Baghdad where the photo above was taken. This particular photo shows a stunningly attractive, fashionably dressed young Iraqi woman in spangled high heels looking at the camera from a crowd scene. She is wearing a chic burgundy blouse-set and black trousers. Her makeup is flawless, her nails manicured. She wears a golden ring, silver watch and necklace and her hair is loose, bound only by sunglasses perched atop her head. She could have stepped off the corner at Hollywood and Vine. Her look is bold, challenging. She is nobody’s fool, slave or property. Standing in front of her with her face turned in profile from the camera is another woman, perhaps in her mid-40’s wearing a dark but fashionable pants suit, with a sage green flowing scarf wrapped securely around her head. The front of her hairline shows by a few inches. She’s modern, but not taking any chances (like many of my Muslim girlfriends who lived overseas). The aura about her speaks of quiet certainty, she is intent upon a speaker, or a scene in front of her. She appears to know exactly what she’s doing and where she’s going.

Or how about this one, my favorite picture of all. I love the grey haired lady shouting into the microphone. I don’t know what this is all about, but she’s giving some issue the what-for alright. Man, what a granny she must be! What a mom, what a daughter, what a leader
