Women DO Perceive Pain Differently (duh)

Sunday, June 24th, 2007 by Maryam Webster

Haven’t we been telling them this all these years? Well just recently, the docs and scientists finally wised up in this article from CNN:

You know you’ll get killer cramps or that nasty headache any minute now, but nothing you take seems to help once the pain hits.

You’re not alone: Many women have a tough time finding the right kind of relief for their pain –and for good reason: Until recently, experts hadn’t actually studied women’s pain specifically, and most research wasn’t conducted with a woman’s hormones and physique in mind. All that’s changing, though.

Docs now know that to banish our aches, they must develop treatments formulated for women’s bodies. What’s more, researchers are also looking for — and finding — ways to head pain off at the pass, so those of us with chronic troubles such as migraine, fibromyalgia, or backache don’t have to be hobbled by pain on a daily basis. Here, the new research will help you live an (almost) pain-free life.

Maryam’s take: If you’d have asked us, we could have told you - right ladies? So you can use epidural blocks and the like suggested in this article, or you could simply do what I did when faced with pain so gaspingly disabling from a broken back I could literally not get out of bed: Energy therapies.

Whether you turn on Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT) or the point-free ZPoint Process (a little ZPoint humor there - wink), they all work well for pain and symptom relief once you understand how  to work them, and without the side effects of Oxy-Contin or other commonly prescribed "killer" pain  relievers.

The article goes on:  What should have been a relatively simple injury became an odyssey that had Weiner visiting specialists all over San Francisco. She finally found a podiatrist who "took a detective-like approach to the problem," Weiner says, by exploring and treating each joint and tendon in a methodical search for the pain’s source. Thanks to this care, which includes regular pain-preventing cortisone shots, the 55-year-old mother of one has been able to resume her hobby of salsa dancing.

Very important in your care to find someone who (1) Believes in you  and (2) Is willing to take the time to be a detective and find out what’s really wrong, instead of shopping you every pain pill in creation without doing the sleuthing first. And, to be a sleuth in your own body, for what bugs you, what is good for you and what you notice that’s different.

In the middle of pain and physical drama? Notice what’s happening from a deep place inside the felt-sense of your body. Take notes and start a journal of your symptoms, precipitating foods, events and people. Be a body detective…

To be continued…

Detox Bathing For Stress & Illness

Monday, December 18th, 2006 by Maryam Webster

I was on penicillin for this whole week after my gum surgery, and could feel the toxins from that and the drugs they gave me during surgery building into yuck, so I decided to take a bath. I mostly shower, but when I take a bath I often indulge in my own patented process "Auntie M’s Daily Detox" bath. Gentle enough you can do it every day if you like, and helps rid the body of the toxins that can build up in even a clean-living body, just from the stress of modern living. Here’s how:

Pre-Preparation: First, use a vegetable fiber brush (nylon is too abrasive to the skin) to vigorously dry brush your entire body inwards toward your heart - up from the feet and down from the neck (leave the face for a rough washcloth in the bath). This will exfoliate the top layer of skin that often clogs our pores and prevents us from detoxing effectively. This will get your heart going, so wait until you’ve calmed down and cooled off a little before you hop in the bath.

The Bath Itself: Into a very warm (not boiling but as hot as you can take) bath put a pound of sea salt, a pound of epsom salts and a pound of baking soda in the bath, and swirl to mix. I add a few drops lavender oil for its harmonizing and generically curative effects. You might see the water turn a funny shade as the toxins are pulled out of your pores. If it looks muddy , gray or even pink, that’s fine, that just tells you the salts and soda are doing their work.

Soak as long as you can, rubbing your skin at least once all over with a rough washcloth (don’t use a nylon glove or cloth as this is too rough - stick to natural fabrics) to get even more dead skin and toxins off. This is a salt-rich bath and you don’t want to end up with a fine coating of salt crystals on your skin after you dry off, so drain your bath, then stand and rinse off thoroughly under a slightly cool shower. This will also wash off any remaining toxins and seal your pores. You should feel smooth as a newborn baby and feel wonderfully warm and glowing with health.

Afterglow: If you use any moisturisers after your bath, PLEASE make sure they don’t contain propyl glycol (antifreeze), anything ending in -paraben (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben), lauryl or laureth sulfate or any other toxic and carcinogenic cosmetic additives. Even some healthfood products can contain these. Don’t put back in what you’ve just taken out! Check labels for healthiest outcomes.

A great way to safely moisturize yourself is while still wet from your bath: take a spoonful of sesame oil (very light), grapeseed oil or coconut oil and rub it between both palms, smoothing over your entire body. This doesn’t feel greasy and if you like a bit of scent, you can add a scant drop of lavender, ylang-ylang or sandalwood, all of which are warming and harmonizing.

Keep yourself warm after such a bath - it’s good to take such a bath close to bedtime and to bundle up and go to bed right after. Your sleep will be deep and sweet when you do this.

A No-Pain Gingival Graft + The Pain Relief Study!!!

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006 by Maryam Webster

Gumline_graft_beforeHere’s something my buddy Andy would describe as "toad-ally FOOOO-GLY" …..but ver-r-r-r-y interesting. Ladies and gentlemen, the horrifying pre-gumline graft recession:  Bleah!! Blouwoeooeoeoeoeoeoh! Geeyakkata-ick!

It’s a terrible thing, truly awful to have happen. The phrase "becoming long in the tooth" suddenly takes on a new and awful meaning. A meaning to the tune of nearly $4,000 that insurance pays only a quarter of. Yeee-ikes!

How do I know so much about this subject?  Yesterday I had a gumline restoration to six lower molar teeth. After several years of watching my lower gumline go south, I bit the bullet, sucked it up and scheduled myself for a gumline graft with the best periodontal surgeon in Silicon Valley.

Dr. R. tried Emdogain on the upper molars a few years ago and it was only partially effective. Emdogain causes tissue to grow, but unfortunately it didn’t grow enough and has partially recessed again. Now you may think I might look like a snaggled toothed country cousin, but these defects largely didn’t show when I smiled. Yep, my smile pretty much looks like the picture over on the left of my blog here.

GOT DENTAL OR OTHER MINOR SURGERY COMING UP?

I am running a PRIVATE STUDY on the methods I use to consistently eliminate pain and anxiety. If you are interested in reducing or eliminating PRE-OP MINOR SURGERY ANXIETY and POST-OP DENTAL OR OTHER MINOR SURGERY PAIN, do consider enrolling in the study. We’ll be using my patented Energy Coaching Pain Relief Process to experience NO pre-surgery anxiety and elimination or great reduction of post-operative pain.

You’ll get: Three sessions of energy coaching, customized energy exercises, a healing audio made just for you, and followup, for the price of a single session with me.

These techniques work, that’s all I can say. I’m proof positive! Won’t you join me in being pain-free?

Interested? Call the Minor Surgery Pain Relief Study line at:  641-985-5700  x 467157, then press Extension 7

Gumline_graft_after_1 Here’s the glam shot, of the after-work. No, these pics aren’t mine, I borrowed them from the good doctor at the website here. But do you see how nicely the fooo-gly exposed root got covered up? Mind you, this must be six months to a year after surgery, it takes awhile for the graft and the surrounding area to match up color wise. But all in all, not bad, eh?

Now, let’s talk about how I remained cool, calm and had no pain during or after the procedure…

Breasts & Baby Harp Seals

Sunday, November 5th, 2006 by Maryam Webster

BabysealYou can prevent the clubbing deaths of baby harp seals in Canada with a simple click of your mouse….and while you’re at it, prevent domestic violence, breast cancer, illiteracy, rare animal extinction and other preventable atrocities, deficiencies and health problems.

You can do this JUST BY CLICKING on special donation links - you don’t have to give a cent! These clicks are subsidised by companies who advertise on the sites, but you don’t have to buy from them if you don’t want to. (though it’s nice to support the sponsors of causes you support when you can) Simply click the "Click To Donate" icons at Donation Junction:

http://www.donationjunction.com/

and Care2:

http://www.care2.com/click2donate/

Often these links will be presented four or five on a page. Once you’ve clicked one, press your browser’s "Back" button and click on the remaining links. Click to donate at every link you can find on these sites. Average time to click them all: 2 minutes.

I just had my mammogram last week - if you’re over 40, you need to get at least a baseline  mammogram…now. But if you can’t afford one, you can get one free at the BreastCancer site. You can click to donate a free mammogram to women who can’t afford them here (and thanks Veronika for the head’s up!):

http://www.thebreastcancersite.com

and here:

http://breastcancer.care2.com/

This last site has a "climb for the cure" theme - a mountain expedition for breast cancer survivors up California’s beautiful Mt. Shasta. Read about it here:

http://www.breastcancerfund.org/site/pp.asp?c=kwKXLdPaE&b=85494

Shockingly, the site states: 7212964 people have been diagnosed with breast cancer since 5/11/01. My mother, grandmother and aunt died of it. I don’t intend to. Educate Yourself!

EFT Often Provides Instant Relief For Migraines

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006 by Maryam Webster

A woman from New Zealand emailed me recently on referral from a colleague, asking for my help with blinding migraine headaches she was suffering. I rarely do this kind of work as an Energy Coach, but heartily recommended Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to her and also to you, if you are a migraine sufferer.

EFT For Relief Of Pain Of All Sorts

Suffering is ENTIRELY optional! EFT has a remarkable reputation for relieving the pain of migraines and other kinds of headaches. While EFT is not a magic bullet - (NO energy therapy is) relief from pain is one of the main reasons people use EFT. EFT also works quite well for menstrual pain, symptoms of menopause, disease processes and other physical symptoms. There is a wealth of information at the original EFT website. Here is the link that will take you direct to the Pain Relief resources. Read through the different ways EFT can be used and as founder Gary Craig says: "try it on everything!"

Death, Choice & The Gospels

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006 by Maryam Webster

BalancechoiceThree friends have passed from this life this week - two in Iraq, fighting people who, by their own admission, they had no quarrel with and were not their enemy. One at a hospital room in Rome, slowly sinking deeper and deeper into oblivion with a grace that defies belief. Still other friends, one in a resort on the West Coast of America and another at a hotel in Rangoon, search for the strength and
wisdom to keep living in times that to them, seem pointlessly cruel.

If this is your life, please go here to learn how to take exceptionally good care of yourself and soothe the feelings of grief and loss.  And as all good things are even more mellow in the fullness of time, it is again apropos to re-vist this classic 2003 observation…

Felicitations of the Afternoon Dear Hearts

Bees are buzzing lazily among the lemon blossoms. Hummingbirds
absentmindedly sup artificial nectar from the brass ‘n glass feeder,
entranced and flying slower than usual. The sun is warm overhead
there’s nothing to do for another ten minutes, and on this day people
are walking with Death and Choice all around me. War, suicide bombings,
friends in deep despair, dear ones with terminal illnesses aching to
grab a few more hours, days, minutes, choosing Life in the midst of
their own dying. Death and Choice are in the air like an unexpected
smell. Death is vogue, Choice is the Happening Thing.

I am in the
center of it, breathing.

Have you ever been in that place before? Where
you are at the center of a maelstrom that you choose not to join, but
must somehow engage?

I am to the best of my ability, an impartial witness to people’s
lives around me - that’s what I do, that’s part of the value I offer
others. Sometimes impartiality is the only sane and logical place to
be, and sometimes the craziest, but the choice that makes the most
sense most of the time. Staying impartial as others struggle to
maintain their integrity and seek clarity isn’t easy, because I so want
them to succeed in whatever they do. But to take sides would invalidate
me as a fair witness to what is entirely their decision.

When others
dance with Death and Choice, they create maelstroms of instant karma
for those who engage with them. I try to dance free of these swirls. Mostly, I succeed. Sometimes I do not.

My life of the last few weeks has been
lived in snapshots:

Dani in the hospital, eyes haunted, with poison gushing into her
veins killing the overproliferating white blood cells - all of them. The dull, vacant hollowness in another friend’s voice on the phone
as she discusses her decision either to die, or keep trying at what she
feels has been a protractedly cruel life.

I want to hug everybody. I
want everything and everyone to be well, to be happy, to be healthy. I
want not to be the only one who sees a way through the mazes of other
people’s lives. I want everyone to see that true path for themselves…
I have worked smooth a path through my own life to float lightly in the
center - breathing. I pay attention to my breath, and the drum of my
heartbeat. Breath, and the drum of my heart, breathing me…breathing…

When I check my gut I know that to be completely fair to everyone, especially myself, I
cannot take sides. I wish everyone to live and be happy, but that
Choice is theirs to make. I choose to maintain impartiality and cast my
lot with Truth, which always wins in the end.

To be impartial, to stay in-Truth and in-the-Flow, I have discovered certain elements to be integral to success.
These I call my "Gospels" though there is certainly nothing of
formalized religion about them, save the invitation to a healthy
Spirituality. In no particular order, these Success Gospels
currently include (but are not limited to):

Water

Breath

Movement

Love

Release

Nourish

Flow

These are the minimum elements that must be present in order to tap
into the unified field where success in all ventures is possible. Not
one may be missing, nor given prominence over the others. They are all
equally important. There are more, but this is the minimum set.

I’ll leave you to chew on this. Feel free to tell me what you think
if you like by clicking the Comment link below. What of these are indispensible to you? Would you amend this list?
How?

Midlife Bliss?

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006 by Maryam Webster

My girlfriend Ingrid just sent this to me - her girlfriend Laurie Silverman sent it to her. I don’t know if Laurie was the author, but it’s hilarious. If you’re a woman in midlife, like those I coach with menopause issues, you’ll get it. And as Ingrid & Laurie say: "If you can’t relate to this, I don’t want to know you."

Enjoy!

"…I’ve seen two shows lately that went on and on about how mid-life is a great time for women.  Just last week Oprah had a whole show on how great menopause will be…  Puhleeeeeeeze!  I’ve had a few thoughts of my own and would like to share them with you.  Whether you are pushing 40, 50, 60 (or maybe even just pushing your luck) you’ll probably relate."

Mid-life is when the growth of hair on our legs slows down.  This gives us plenty of time to care for our newly acquired mustache.

In mid-life women no longer have upper arms, we have wing spans.  We are no longer women in sleeveless shirts, we are flying squirrels in drag.

Mid-life is when you can stand naked in front of a mirror and you can see your rear without turning around.

Mid-life is when you go for a mammogram and you realize that this is the only time someone will ask you to appear topless.

Mid-life is when you want to grab every firm young lovely in a tube top and scream, "Listen honey, even the Roman empire fell and those will too."

Mid-life brings wisdom to know that life throws us curves and we’re sitting on our biggest ones.

Mid-life is when you look at your-know-it-all, beeper-wearing teenager and think: "For this I have stretch marks?"

In mid-life your memory starts to go.  In fact the only thing we can retain is water.

Mid-life means that your Body By Jake now includes Legs By Rand McNally — more red and blue lines than an accurately scaled map of Wisconsin.

Mid-life means that you become more reflective…You start pondering the "big" questions.  What is life?  Why am I here?  How much Healthy choice ice cream can I eat before it’s no longer a healthy choice?

But mid-life also brings with it an appreciation for what is important. We realize that breasts sag, hips expand and chins double, but our loved ones make the journey worthwhile.

Would any of you trade the knowledge that you have now, for the body you had way back when?

Maybe our bodies simply have to expand to hold all the wisdom and love we’ve acquired.

That’s my philosophy and I’m sticking to it!

How Buxom Gals Can Maintain Breast Health & Perform EFT Correctly

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

Buxomclipart_1

This just in from a fellow Buxom Beauty, and a very good tip for all of the well-endowed who practice EFT!

Dear Maryam  I want to tap the lymphatic breast point, but let’s face it, I’m not Twiggy. Where, exactly do you tap if you’re a bit buxom? Do I, uh, lift one up at a time and tap underneath? Thanks for your answer…

Maryam replies: I too am a big beautiful woman, but even our slimmer sisters who are well-endowed have to "lift it". Also, the Liver 14 "under breast point" and the neuro-lymphatic point close to it can both be tapped by using the karate chop side of your hand, lifting the breast tissue with your opposite hand and tapping with the same-side hand. The tapping hand cups the breast as it taps. Very comfy, great to make part of your morning and evening tapping routines.

If you only have one hand to work with, you can lift the breast tissue with your same-side wrist and allow the fingers to curve under the breast to tap the underside. Every time you tap the underside of the breast always make sure to tap the underarm, collarbone, thymus and to massage your sore spots. (Don’t know where these are? Check out the diagram here)

That way you’ll help your entire breast area to be healthy!
