B&O Espresso Seattle - having wonderful time!

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

B&O Espresso Seattle - having wonderful time!

Mobloggin’ from the B&O Espresso cafe in the heart of Seattle’s Capitol Hill district. Where locals go for the best late night java & desserts-to-diet-for. Whiskey bread pudding here is worth doing pennance for. Seattle’s coffee culture probably peaked in the late 90’s say the perky baristas. The culture vulture scene is all but passe, and has been taken over by a more community center and "good first date place-a-la-Friends" type of aroma. Hip fashionistas are at a minimum - comfortable shoes and relaxed waistlines predominate. Thanks be to Caffiena, Goddess of the Dimensionally Oppressed.

The vacation is mostly good, despite whirlwind-tour fatigue and a pulled muscle or two from hiking. OSF’s rendition of Marlowe’s Faustus was delightfully diabolic, Will’s 12th, earnest if frothy, & the state of Ma Rainey’s bottom in Ashland, Oregon was…black indeed. J-Bear and I luxuriate in several hours of backgammon, philosophical dialectic and random meanderings spiced with cappucino, brandy flambeed brie and red grapes, pecan tartlettes, lemonade and cucumber sandwiches.

Further explication anon, for a fine, dark breve and a board of hnefetafl calleth. Avaunt et exeunt all…goodnight!

Sugar Shocked?

Monday, July 11th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

As most of you know, I used EFT to get past my sugar cravings easily and effectively. I even taught an EFT class a couple of years ago to a group of sugarholics led by Connie Bennett,  coordinator of the "Sugar Shocked!" community and anti-sugar maven. It was a great course, and the people were so eager to get over their sugar cravings that energy therapies were just the add-on to the fabulous techniques Connie teaches.

Now I see courtesy of BlogFather Andy Wibbels, that Connie has started her own blog: http://www.sugarshockblog.com/. It’s full of great information on how to kick sugar, the absolute evil that refined sugars do to our bodies and ways to eat and live without disease. Especially if you’re a menopausal or peri-menopausal woman, you need to get the sugar out of your diet to live a truly sweeter life. Check  it out!

Moondoves & The Poopsnake

Saturday, June 18th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

Old hotel bathroom mural. Moondoves!

Hyatt St. Claire mural in the bathroom of our top-floor room. From here we have a marvellous view of the Marriott across the way and can log into their free wireless. <*grin*> We are staying in a hotel in the town we live in, as tomorrow is a kickin’ Juneteenth celebration out by the Poopsnake (aka, San Jose’s answer to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, that the artist interpreted as a giant coiled pile of…you guessed it) in Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

On Tuesday, this most ancient of hotels in this city is to be sold and for all the citizens know, its Romantic era carved, inlaid, marbled and ornately embellished furnishings may well be scrapped. Including the hand-painted murals in every room and the marvellous marble fireplaces like the one in the room we’re staying in. We thought we’d get our kicks for our first and last time before the debacle. We dine at the hotel restaurant Il Fornaio on a regular basis, but have never stayed here. When you live in the town, why would you?

A night away from the crazy kids (for which read: crack-smokin’ kitties…well they *act* like they smoke crack sometimes!) and a homebase for the morrow’s celebration. We’re enjoying our weekend - and hope you enjoy yours…

Daily Doses and This Summer’s “It” Drink

Monday, April 25th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

Our soil no longer holds enough nutrients to imbue our foods with the correct mixture of vitamins and nutritional components to sustain an optimally healthy human being. Unless you eat 100% organic from well managed farms, you’re probably deficient. When I turned 40 some years ago, I found odd things happening from a lifetime of improper eating that I wanted to correct: dry skin, creaky joints, fuzzy memory…the list went on.

I educated myself about proper diet for today, which includes such recent discoveries as essential fatty acids (EFA’s) the wonder oils that can help you lose weight, lube both muscle and bone tissue and give you baby-soft skin. Flax, evening primrose, borage and marine (fish derived) oils are examples of these. I make sure I get plenty in my daily diet and have at least two tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day, a few spoonsful of hazelnut-tasting flax oil in my food (raw, not cooked, it’s really good in salad dressings!) and supplement with Evening Primrose oil capsules, Borage oil capsules, twice the RDA of Vitamin E oil, a combination marine-derived Omega oil supplement. And just because I like it, every so often for a real treat, I take a few spoons of Barleans Woman combination oil. Barleans contains flax, rosemary and evening primrose oils plus flax lignans (solids) and soy isoflavones said to be good for women’s reproductive systems at midlife. Mmm, yummy.

I’ve also been taking a couple of quarts of cranberry water on a daily basis at the behest of nutritionist guru, Ann Louise Gittleman, to support the liver and flush toxins cleanly away. We’ve been alternating this with the yummiest drink ever - Cucumber Lemon Water. Refreshing in the summer and bracing in the winter, this mix both alkalinizes the body as well as tastes like it just came out of a spa. It did - I first had it at  Preston Wynne in Saratoga. Try it, you’ll really like it. And if you’re coming off of a lifetime soda habit, Cucumber Lemon Water can help ease the need for "something different that just plain water".

Cucumber Lemon Water Culinary Category: Aromatic Hydrosol Infusion

Summer 2005’s "It drink" of the season is served in swanky spas worldwide for its medicinal benefits, and can be yours for a mere dollar or so a pitcher. Into two quarts of filtered or spring water slice 1 peeled and seeded cucumber and 1 lemon into half-moons. Best to use organic produce but failing that, scrub the skin of your lemon mercilessly to remove all waxes and presentation chemicals the grocery store might have sprayed it with. Squeeze each slice of lemon gently as you drop it in the water and give the skin a twist to release its essential oils. The water will take on the thin flavor of the lemon’s juice and a lush richness from the oil of its skin - an essential component of the taste and nutritional benefit you’re aiming for.

Why? Lemons are astringent, antibacterial, antisudorific, detoxifying and have many other fine medicinal properties. Cucumbers alkalinize the modern body, normalizing systems made acidic by stress and too many trips to the coffee shop, plus providing micronutrients to the skin - save a few of those cucumber rounds to pamper your tired eyes with!

Refrigerate the mixture 24 hours and remove cucumber and lemon slices. If you leave the slices in more than 48 hours, the infusion will turn bitter. Reserve a few slices of lemon and cucumber to garnish your glass, or serve as a non-alcoholic Pimms No. 1 Cup replacement, with a handful of diced cucumber and lemon sidecar.

Enjoy!

Success, by Lion Feuchtwanger

Sunday, March 13th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

Jbear_and_friend_2 The pictures are now available from our Point Reyes weekend. J. Random Wonderbear and I escaped the city and two lengthy open houses (at our house, during which we have to be….elsewhere) last weekend to head north to the tiny seaside town of Inverness, in the Point Reyes State Park. Migrating pregnant whales, enough sea air to run the fustiness out of your head and gentle quiet mornings surrounded by the greenwood. The cottage we rented had an excellent bed which I would returnSpankysurf_drakesbeach_1 for alone. It was in addition spacious and had beautiful double decking. The picture above is of The J. and a friend he picked up on Drake’s Beach. The surf was very spanky and several surfers actually made an afternoon of  it. You can see a wave rolling in at right with the fingerlet of Drake’s Estero jutting into the sea on the left. The best oysters come from this sheltered estuary, or so we’re told.

Lionized…

On an afternoon’s jaunt into Point Reyes Station’s only bookseller, I found a basket of intriguing blank journals made from the covers of old books whose pages had fallen into disrepair. The Womenlionjunglechoc_1covers, all from the early 1900’s, were spiral-bound with new blank paper. I was about to leave when I spotted "Success…" by one Lion Feuchtwanger, which I purchased. I had no idea who Lion Feuchtwanger was but being a success-oriented life coach, I was intrigued. This is what I wrote on the first few pages:

"I don’t know who you are Lion Feuchtwanger, but thanks and blessings to you for volunteering to be one of the patron saints of my Success."

Now I find that Feuchtwanger was an influential Jewish writer and "a distinguished member of the post-World War I German literary scene, lived and wrote in political exile for the last quarter-century of his life. His masterwork, Success, is one of the great novels of the 20th century." (source: Bookrags) What better a spirit mentor could a writer choose than the writer of a great novel? I am ordering the English translation of Erfolg, or Success and will read with interest this "thinly veiled potshot at the Nazi war machine".

J-Bear kindly bought me a lovely book on women pioneers, both European and minority, that you can also see in this picture and the local grocery store, always a plethora of rich, healthy and healthfood-type goodies, yielded up Jungle Chocolate, which is cacao bean with honey and nothing else. Vended in tobaccolike shreds, this particular package also included macadamia nut bits. If you’re avoiding chocolate due to all the additives, try Jungle Chocolate, "the world’s purest chocolate from pod to package". Its taste is both simple and suprisingly elegant.

I went out on the wonderful second-story deck of our vacation cottage to bask in  the gentle sun under the madrone, oak and ash trees and read. I took The J’s mp3 player with me, Mr. Lion, a wonderful mug of pure Kona coffee and wrote…

"I have imbibed the nectar of treesilence here, and witnessed mistressful feats of weaving - silks so fine only faeries could set the warp and weft, spun by invisible fiber-witches, each with eight spindles… The speech of trees is slow, silent, soft and sibilant with whispered secrets. We’ve seen hares, thrush, Reynard-the-fox, finches, grackles, buzzards, ravens, eagles, 2 Pepe Le Pew’s - one’s signature tail spotted, the second’s calling card briefly - pungently - detected upon an evening’s soft zephyr. Small, soft eyed, green-and-yellow striped newts and other small creatures appear when humans are silent and respectful in the wild."

The shy Tule elk didn’t look up as we passed on our way back from the beach. We took in favorite Drake’s Beach around the headland fromJsurf_1 the estero (whence JBear’s yummy oysters came, on our first night here), and wilder, gritter North Beach, much more to my taste. North Beach had a sharp drop-off in the sand just prior to the waveline. We sat on this as a mini-cliff and watched the water come in under our dangling feet. I built an Incan sunwheel in the sand, crowned with a dried jellyfish fin flag on a driftwood pole, and we watched with delight a dragon kite breasting the wild winds and tearing through them to harry passing gulls with gusto.

All in all, it was one of those perfect weekends destined to go down in family history as "them was the days". I am profoundly glad and grateful that we are able to do such things, to take ourselves away when the stress of our living/house selling conditions become unpleasant. Here, there is such beauty, such silence, the sounds only natural ones that caress and please the ear, in sharp contrast to the din of the city. In our house, we must spray artificial freshener whenever potential buyers come to view the place, lest a stray improper scent (we have kitties) put them off the idea. The scents here in the wild are of pine, madrone, sea and fresh air. A balm to the spirit.

Standing on the headland, with bay on my left hand and open sea on my right, breathing deeply of the wild and deeply invigorating air, I ask myself - what better gift than this could one have?

Neutraceutical Supplements & Personal Empowerment

Wednesday, January 19th, 2005 by Maryam Webster

In a comment on my post about "Power of Intention" a kind correspondent wrote in about her experience of a particular neutraceutical supplement line. Since my reply was long and worth wider exposure, I thought I’d post the correspondence here:

Hi Maryam, I have a couple of thoughts for you regarding your back. Have you tried/heard of Standard Process supplements? They are a powerful line of supplements that promote healing in a variety of ways. A couple are indicated specifically for healing cavities in teeth; I’m sure there are some for healing bone and ligament…

Hi Loren, Thanks for the pointer. I’ve heard of Standard Process - I’ve had chiropracters prescribe them in the past. I don’t use Standard Process products though due to their inclusion in nearly all of the relevant products (Cardio Plus, Antronex, Calcifood, Betacol, Drenamin/Drenatrophin, Biost, Collagen C…etc.)  of animal tissues, specifically bovine (cow) and immature bovine (veal calf) heart, liver, endocrine, bone & connective tissues. Veal consumption is outside of my personal ethics and bovine organs are a potentially dangerous range of tissues to consume given the rise of Kreutzfeld-Jacobs (mad cow) and similar impurities, coupled with the inability of pharmaceutical/scientific industries to purify tissues at the prion level, where KJ hides.

After many years research in concert with nutritionists, chiropracters and my own repeated testing (that’s energy testing of my body as it changes) I have my own formulation of neutraceuticals that are right for me. I stress over and over again the great importance of each individual doing their own research into their particular disabling condition, and supplements, exercises and other interventions that have been proven to help. Personal research is empowering, helps you help your wellness team, and has the grand result of bettering your mental/emotional, spiritual and physical health.

Do the research in books by Ann Louise Gittleman. I use her Fat Flush material successfully and advocate the research she’s done. My health has improved amazingly with these nutritional recommendations. Ann Louise writes about what essential fatty acids and plant oils can do for weightloss, menopause and brain health. Julia Ross’s The Mood Cure is great for figuring out your genetically related nutritional deficits. The biologist Dr. Raymond Peat’s website is great for researching thyroid problems, nutrition no-no’s and women’s health. There are others. But do the research! Just because a medical professional tells you "this has worked a lot of people with your condition" doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for your unique personal condition - or it may work wonderfully well. Best thing is to know your own body’s needs and patterns before you pop that powder, pill or potion.

Doing the research and continually testing out the results in your own life will be the best thing you ever did for your health - I promise! And you’ll also have the satisfaction of having more power over your own healthcare than the average consumer. Being in tune with your body not just at your yearly checkup, but every single day, is the best present you can give yourself.

Warmest of Blessings, Maryam

P.S. Thanks for the chiropracter reference Loren, but I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area - a bit far away from South Carolina. Max sounds wonderful though - I’m so happy you found a good one! :-)

White Truffle Oil Dreamin’

Sunday, December 12th, 2004 by Maryam Webster

White musk,

Rich marrow spilling…

Survival is assured.

I have formed a mild mania for White Truffle Oil. Well, to Il Fornaio’s Proscuitto, Arugula, Grana Padano parmesan and Porcini laden Pizza Cristina. This delightful concoction is liberally drizzled with White Truffle Oil that smells like roasted ox marrow - buttery, rich and sustaining. A hint of extreme luxury rich in beneficial nutrients that there is never enough of for the entire tribe to share - an honor to savor. I am certain white truffle oil must have medicinal properties. "It hath the power to cheer and mellow the disposition" to quote Mrs. Grieve. Hie thee to a grocery store and try some.

Tonight I made a happy but tired J-Bear the gift of a small quantity of white truffle oil infused roasted pecans. He had made me a gift of the oil after his earlier trip to the shops. Such decadence. ("Land sake!" Grandmother Mimi exclaims inside my head, deeply whiffing the bottle and wiping clean hands on her apron.)  Dr. Mercola preaches the values of mineral-rich Celtic sea salt as does Dr. Batman. I just happened to have some on hand that I use for cooking (it’s nice to know periodically that we’re doing something right, unawares). I ground sea salt in a mortar and sprinkled the pecans with it.  Foodies: Toss pecans thoroughly in walnut or almond oil with salt and broil on a cookie sheet at 250F for ten or fifteen minutes. Resist the temptation to use flavored salts - the pecans are richness enough on their own. Drizzle sparingly with white truffle oil and toss again. Eat, trying very hard to constrain portion size. Heavenly.

This collation was a really nice treat after a whole lot of unremitting toil that’s left us wanting Minor Indulgences. We felt most luxurious consuming those Roasted Pecans  - the only one of my Mother’s holiday delicacies it’s relatively safe for healthy people to eat. White truffle oil. Mmmm…

We have plans to lay in some arugula and prosciutto and make our own pizza dough, though Dr. Mercola does preach quite voiciferously against grains lately, and now, perilously, about the dangerous mycotoxins in my beloved truffles! Okay Doc, but I’m not ready yet. A few more artisan pizzas and sprouted flaxseed rolls. I’m going to work on getting rid of sensitivities to grains, though I will probably eventually cease eating them as my body purifies. But not quite yet!

I still want to have the odd luxury, having given up all the vices I thought I had and being rudely informed that there are others - many, many others that will need to go for perfect health. Well thanks a lot Doc, thanks a lot. I appreciate the advice, but jimminy crickets, what a bummer! I’m going to keep affirming all things healthy and positive in my life anyway - a great Practice at any time. And in the right time, these things too shall pass…

One by one, the pleasures of the past are replaced by greater knowledge, the awareness of decisions and opportunity of Choice. As I have made decisions to forego certain foods and beverages, I have also made decisions to exit certain environments and relationships for healthier ones. Wheat is largely gone in my life but for special treat moments such as the ever-yummy Pizza Cristina and Mom’s holiday pecans.  Spiritual communities that were rife with chaos and politics have been released for a smaller fellowship of rare but very special individuals who lift me up, consistently. I’ve chosen to eschew the corporate environment in favor of running my own consulting business which is a thousand times more rewarding both to me and to those I work with. In these small ways and others, I am turning my life into a life that makes more of a difference and helps both myself and everyone I can touch.

We all touch each and every person that even peripherally crosses our lives. Even a friend heard-of but never met is having impact and influence on you, and you upon them. Now that influence may be small, but you are connected by the thread of your mutual friend, so it still impacts. So it is throughout The Field. Think about it.

Morel of the Story: When in doubt as to what you can do to move forward and upward, look for what can shift, and in Joy, shift it. Food, people, environments, whatever, as long as you remain in Joy. The Joy is your filter and indicator flag that lets you know that you are moving towards the right thing. Whatever that may be for you. Trying to shift without engaging your passion and your love is like trying to move the Sphinx by yourself. Sure, it can be done but it’s going to take all your energy, and for what? Consider deeply the role of Joy in Moving the Universe…

Falling in Love with Water…

Friday, July 23rd, 2004 by Maryam Webster

Here’s a treat! A portion of a chapter from my forthcoming Quantum Flow Bioenergetics book

I have been falling in love with water for the past year and coming home to its incredible powers of healing, age-proofing, meditation and depth. Also for its pliability, programmability and how soft it makes my skin when I drink lots of it. More and more as I up my intake of pure water, interesting things are occuring within my biocircuit. I am increasingly able to think about a thing one moment and it literally appears the next. The time between observing that change is desirable and that change being implemented has shortened dramatically and since I’ve upped my intake of water, I’m not hungry at all. Dr. Batman [see below] says that most hunger pangs are really signals of thirst. With all this water on board, I’m very hydrated and very full, hence am eating less. I’m losing weight, my skin glows and I’ve not been sick since upping my intake of water. I feel lighter, cleaner and very, very calm. All in all, a grand and excellent thing.

A Japanese researcher, Dr. Masaru Emoto has been sending out some interesting observations about water in his “Messages From Water” books which interestingly corroborate the properties of water that spiritual practitioners have long worked with. The reviewer from Amazon’s website shares these perceptions:

“The Hidden Messages in Water is an eye-opening theory showing how water is deeply connected to people’s individual and collective consciousness. Drawing from his own research, scientific researcher, healer, and popular lecturer Dr. Masaru Emoto describes the ability of water to absorb, hold, and even retransmit human feelings and emotions. Using high-speed photography, he found that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward it. Music, visual images, words written on paper, and photographs also have an impact on the crystal structure. Emoto theorizes that since water has the ability to receive a wide range of frequencies, it can also reflect the universe in this manner. He found that water from clear springs and water exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns, while polluted water and water exposed to negative thoughts forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors. Emoto believes that since people are 70 percent water, and the Earth is 70 percent water, we can heal our planet and ourselves by consciously expressing love and goodwill.”

This concurrs with current theory about energy therapies and is a perfect compliment to them. Folks have been charging water since Heck was a pup. Baptist and Mormon ministers as well as Shamanic practitioners in my family’s line, not to mention Wiccans, Druids and generic Pagans-down-the-block all do this. Water is commonly used as a sacred element in many rituals of healing and sacrament because from ancient times humans knew water had the ability to hold resonance. Spiritual masters of all traditions blessed water to be given to the sick. Since most illnesses have their roots in chronic dehydration, water’s ability to heal is not as much of a stretch as it might first appear. And if water were given the added imprint of loving, perfected energy, such as the Hado or “universal” frequency of perfection Dr. Emoto speaks of, such charged water would invite the fibers it hydrates to resonate at that same frequency, as it is absorbed. Reiki is one well-known energy therapy that taps into this universal harmonic, but all energy therapies do, whether they say so or not. I’m no scientist but it makes perfect sense to me. It’s sheer magic.

Water Magic
Here is a simple water charging magic that the women of my family use to purify our family’s drinking water. This is magic of the holiest sort. Be reverential and hold the water in your hands - you’re holding your family’s very health in your hands (and your own - you should be drinking your own product). How does this work? You are bringing your intent, or resonance into contact with the main constituent of your physical body, creating sympathetic resonance between both you and it until you both resonate at the Universal Perfection (UP) frequency. This is the magical part and what would magic be without an incantation? Here it is, incant with good cheer as you feel or visualise the container filling with pure white light:

“Pure and perfect creature of water,
I cast out all unclean within you
Let light and love dwell here within
With (Deity’s) hand upon it
So it is, blessed be it”

Or words to that effect. You can substitute your Deity of choice or not, as you wish. The point is to raise the vibration of the water if it’s polluted, passed through the hands of a negative person (becoming imprinted with negativity) or otherwise contaminated. The goal is to raise the energy frequency to water’s most perfect expression. You could also say that you’re trying to get water’s most basic and pure molecular format, or you could see it as raising water’s frequency to that of the mind of God/dess. Simple chants like this are a form of prayer that ask politely for the Divine to cast out any unclean spirits (or pollution, or negative thoughform impressions, etc.) and return the water to it’s original pure and perfect state. A simple matter, also easily accomplished with no chant or supplication, just the power of one’s focused Intent. Choose your tool, each will get the job done. And when you consume such positively and lovingly charged water, you will notice a wonderful boost of energy and a cleaner feeling to yourself. To get as near perfect as possible before we even get out of the gate, start with water that has already been purified. Advanced Mages will want to go even further and use a pure-sourced water such as Trinity or Evian. Recommendation: Do this little blessing at least once a day, if not more often. Repeat often, as desired and drink deep of health, purity and perfection.

How nice a thing it is to love your family so much that you want them to drink only the best, and that the essential elixir vitæ is both medicament and Wellness Aid Numero Uno. My grandmother Mimi served up water for breakfast, lunch and dinner in a huge blue Delftware pitcher replete with little Dutch boy and windmill. She had a way of brushing the pitcher with her hand before putting it on the table. Her lips would move in the briefest of blessings as she set the pitcher down, and always before the first grabby grandbaby (often me) clapped grubby paws to the drink. I still have that pitcher today and it still radiates the gentle loving my grandmother, then mother, and now myself, put into it. What a sacred treasure!

Speaking of water as a healing potion, an Iranian physician with the rather interesting name of “Dr Batman” has several wonderful books on the subject that quite enlightened me. Dr. Fereydoon Batmangelidj advocates moisture of the purest kind as a panacea - water, and only water as a restorative, antihistamine, anti-cancer agent and a direct counteractant to back pain and obesity. All of these topics caught my eye as I raced with wild abandon through his Water for Health, For Healing, For Life: You’re not Sick, You’re Thirsty! this month. Dr. Batmangelidj was a doctor in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. Having little else, he began scientific experimentation and effected miraculous cures by giving copious quantities of water, and only water to his patients. His website speaks of this and of collusion between organized medicine and the drug companies to conceal this fact:

“It is chronic dehydration that causes the pains and degenerative diseases of the human body.” It is clinically and scientifically clear that the human body has many distinct ways of showing its general or local water needs. Depending on where there is water shortage, many localized complications such as asthma are produced. We believe this information has been methodically and fraudulently concealed until now. Over 18 years of research has now revealed a simple natural cure for so many painful and serious health problems. It is called “WATER CURE.”
- Dr. F. Batmangelidj

Isn’t that interesting? Please go check out his site and buy a book or two. Very enlightening, particularly combined with the theory about further charging the massive amount of water you NEED to take into your body every day (guess what? those “eight, eight ounce glasses” are just a starting point!) with the positive intent of whatever you need in your life right now. Wouldn’t that be an interesting thing to play with? Hmmm… I wonder what that would get me if I did it every day, as many times a day as I filled my glass, for the next year?

May You Never Thirst!

Does anyone reading this resonate with what I’m writing here? If so, please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment box. How do you honor the sacred, purify your body and care for your health? I love methods that combine several good purposes like this. Feel free to post a tip for the rest of us!

Gemutlich Afternoon

Saturday, June 26th, 2004 by Maryam Webster

My German girlfriends have a word for it: gemutlich. The state when you’re with friends, have all that you want or need with you, and are in the midst of a big warm cosy. Gemutlich. Ten friends dropped by this weekend for one of our infamous garden party barbecues, absolutely oozing gemutlich vibes. (Inga, consider them chunnelled your way - get well soon!) The talk was deep and caring, light and carefree all at the same time. We taught each other things and read tarot cards and runes for each other. We were a mixed group, Neuro-Linguistic programmers, Bay Area life coaches and neo-pagan folk. Jeff brought the wonderful present of a set of runes, and the pagans started talking about the comparison of tarot to runes and readings were given. Everyone learned how to access their own intuition and their own readings. JBear trotted out his Silicon Valley Tarot. The coaches and the NLP’ers case conferenced and traded best changework tricks and tips. Several of us decided to put out a CD together. Everyone was gently drunk on sunshine, good food, congenial companionship and (for those who gently partook) JBear’s fine Smoking Loon chardonnay, which he buys exclusively for the label but which has turned out to be quite mellow and goes well with chevre on sesame flatbread.
