Creating the "Spiritual Expanders" section of the MediaStore  I chose as inspiration Eckhart Tolle’s Findhorn Retreat, and enjoyed a repeat listening of it as I worked. Doing web work really can take you deeper into consciousness…or out of it, depending. I marvelled at how swiftly one falls out of consciousness into the place we think is conscious but is only the illusion of what-is. The simplest things bring us back to consciousness. Breathing…the rise and fall of the chest and abdomen…seeing the gleam of quiet love in a kitten’s eyes and truly connecting…a lone leaf fluttering soundlessly through crisp air to the forest floor, speaking to you…the beat of your own heart.

Consciousness is quiet and self-contained. It does not thrive in those beginning to awaken, in busy crowded situations, in jangling and noisy environments. If you are just beginning a practice of conscious wakefulness, try meditating on a quiet environment or alone in nature. Observe what in your environment is the most "alive". And how you are connected with all that is living.

That which is connecting, that which is perceiving, is the true "you".

Gentle Being, Wake Up Now…

GreentaraI previously spoke about several ways to wake up in your life here. I’ve another way that will support you day to day. This involves use of ZPoint Process (click this link if you don’t know ZPoint as yet). I’ve given this process the title of a phrase I heard while in meditation with the thangka of Green Tara that hangs in my bedroom:

"Gentle Being, Wake Up Now…"

1. Sit in your meditation space or at your personal altar or a similar quiet space and with intent, turn your attention to the Now.

2. Register all that is happening. Focus on what you hear, the many different sounds there are around you. Birdsong, a plane overhead, the hum of a fan, your own bones creaking, the soft whoosh of your breath, the ticking of a clock, children playing outside…and realize by the time you have listed all these to yourself, that the moment has changed and you are in a different Now.

3. What do you see as your eyes rest gently, with soft focus? The many twists and turns of a painting, a random sock strewn on the floor, motes of dust hanging and turning in the air, a shaft of sunlight illuminating the dustmotes and the pattern of the carpet…and realize by the time you have listed all these to yourself, that the moment has changed and you are in a different Now.

4. What do you feel, as your attention turns inwards? The taste in your mouth, the smells around you, your left leg feeling stretched in the quads, sweat running down your neck, an itch on your right forefinger, the breath filling your nostrils and lungs, a sense of heaviness in the abdomen…and realize by the time you have listed all these to yourself, that the moment has changed and you are in a different Now.

5. When you have brought your mindful presence and awareness to what composes your space, both outer and inner, draw a circle in your mind, out in front of you by a few feet. Put all of the things you’ve noticed into your circle. Right now, you are outside the circle, which symbolizes the way we may experience ourselves being "outside of" the Present Moment.

6. Now, ZPoint style, clear all the ways: "I am asleep to the full experience of the present moment" and perhaps all the ways: "I disconnect myself from the Now"…or words that are even more meaningful to you. And also, all the reasons, emotions and places those are held in your bodymind concerning living fully in the Now.

7. Now, count these down while repeating your cue word, over and over again, down from 10 to 0. You might be interested to find in this particular "erase the tape" that the images in your circle do not fade, but in fact become more real, more solid, more "there" to you.

8. When you are down to zero, then step your whole body into the circle and sit, stand or lie down - whatever is nurturing to you. Be with all the things in your present awareness.

9. Make a positive affirmation such as "I am continually aware of the present moment and live in the Now"

10. Count upwards from 1 to 10. You might be interested to note that the things inside your circle with you sometimes sink into your bodymind, or fade away entirely as they become facets of your continuing awareness. Whatever changes you observe will be unique to you, and will be harbingers of your increased awareness.

How To Wake Up

I spoke in my previous post about Sleepwalking - what the sages mean by "being asleep". Multitasking as a sure way to somnambulent oblivion and so on. If you truly wish to awaken inside your life, there are a few very simple things you can do without being a wise old monk or nun to begin with. For us moderns without access to a deep forest retreat or monastic cell, the following are both doable and mostly easy.

1. Read Eckhart Tolle’s works and listen to his recordings. I particularly savored his Findhorn Retreat while ill. It brought awareness to the processes of illness and enabled me to heal myself more quickly. Ill or not, it’s a classic, as is his seminal work "The Power of Now".

2. From Tolle you will learn this one simple thing: Pay Attention To The Now.

Sounds Simple.  Isn’t at first, for most modern humans.  Takes work, but gets infinitely easier.

It is however, the single most important tenet to Awakening that anyone can point you towards.

3. How to do this: just pay attention to what is around you, wherever you are. Get used to modeling these awarenesses to yourself in terms of what you see, what you hear, what you feel inside and outside your body, what you smell and if applicable, what you taste.

4. You’ll notice that your awareness fades after awhile. At first, you may only be able to keep a few seconds of awareness going. As your mind comes to the realization that you’ve dropped out of the Now, gently allow your awareness to refocus on the present moment. As the past and memories or future projections come up into your conscious awareness, allow yourself to gently slide back into the Now, as you become aware of your reminiscing.

5. Ask: what are you aware of behind yourself? In front is easy, we use our eyes. Humans have an almost over-reliance on vision. Get used to using the senses that don’t rely on vision. Skin sensation, the pressure of a breeze on your body, the temperature of a room, the energy of another person or animal passing behind you.

6. It’s fun to have a friend pass behind you at different distances. Learn from practicing easy exercises like this to calibrate exactly where other beings are in space relative to you. When you can do this, you will have Awakened that part of you that lived in caves millenia ago and knew within microns where things were in very dark places without candle nor moonshine to guide them. This is an old and valuable knowledge. And it came to those who were much more Awake than we are now.

The Present Moment - "The Now" is all the time that we ever have. It is all that is truly real, for the past once experienced is gone, and the future has not yet happened*. Now is all we truly have. May you make the most of yours….


*Exception to the Above: The Now is all we have until we learn to manipulate time (which of course, doesn’t really exist), but this is deep magick indeed, and a topic for another time and place. Anon!

Sleepwalking Through Life

Many spiritual teachers now are speaking of the potential changes to happen very soon with larger and larger portions of the population "awakening" to Enlightenment or at least the possibility of Enlightenment. Eckhart Tolle says that if you are listening to his talks or reading his books, this indicates that the process of awakening has at least begun if not progressed significantly, which is a comforting thought. We wouldn’t be attracted to such things of course, if we were still asleep.

But how does one know they are asleep versus awake? I prefer not to think of this state of unawareness as "sleep" but as a serious case of Attention Deficit Disorder. Obviously, people aren’t sleepwalking through their lives or more auto accidents would happen. Okay, okay, so some of us are sleepwalking. <smile>

But what Andrew Cohen and Eckhart Tolle are talking about in terms of sleep is different. Imagine being in school. This Earth School  (to borrow from Thayer White) is constantly teaching us all the time. Sometimes with a teacher in front of you, sometimes with the teacher stepped further away at the other end of the classroom - which could be a supermarket, an empty lot, a soccer field, the bus stop, hospital, your living room or anyplace else. (sometimes, but rarely, is it an actual school classroom)

Being a bright person interested in lots of different topics, you might have a book open on your desk, be listening to your iPod or be surfing the web on your laptop, all at the same time. You’re listening to the teacher…sort of. You’re taking the odd note or two…kind of. But when the pop quiz comes, you don’t make the grade you would like. You feel you should have made a hundred and ended up with sixty-five - how did THAT happen??? 

That O Best Beloved, is what the sages mean by "being asleep". The fully engaged and attentive student gets the best test score, learns deeply and internalizes fully. Multitasking is for sleepwalkers. And so it is in all the stages and plays of life.
